A remembrance display removed in 2023, originally reflecting on 22nd February 2011

The concept of The Empty Chair depicting the loss of someone has been used repeatedly across time and cultures.

The installation consisted of 185 white chairs, each one different, representing the individuality of those who died as a result of the Christchurch earthquake on 22nd February 2011.

In its post earthquake refuge an old grain shed is a magical world of happiness, laughter, drama and intrigue.

Inside the walls of the old grain shed is a diverse and dynamic company of 60 permanent staff plus hundreds of artists and artisans who produce 19 productions each year. Over 150,000 ticket buyers enter The Court each year to feast on the varied offering of theatrical works, all created and produced on-site.

Christchurch street art really came into itself as what they call gap fillers where building spaces were opened up leaving bare walls. To be taken over by what some call the urban phenomenon moving across the globe.
Christchurch has now became a world street art capital. A Lonely Planet book published in 2017 ranked Christchurch alongside New York, Barcelona, Berlin and London as one of 39 cities with a rich street art scene.
