New Brighton’s new hot pools facility He Puna Taimoana has been blessed ahead of its official opening.
The blessing was led by Matapopore and Ngāi Tahu representatives  Lynne-Harata Te Aika and  Te-Kaharoa Manihera and marks the end of the construction work on the new hot pools.

Then make sure you book in for one of He Puna Taimoana’s new Friday night ‘After Hours’ events that will take place outside the complex’s usual opening hours.

The After Hours events are being introduced on a trial basis, with the first one planned for this Friday from 8 to 10pm.  

“New Brighton has some great hospitality businesses that are open late so couples can combine a soak in the hot pools with drinks or an evening meal to create a really special night out,” Ms Skipper says.

Bookings for the After Hours events sessions can be made through the He Puna Taimoana website.

People who are He Puna Taimoana members also need to book and pay to attend After Hours.

A budget of $11.2 million for the hot water pool facility on our Christchurch beachfront includes a steam room, sauna, café and best of all six pools. 

The pool complex occupies around 1900 square m of beach front area at, between the new playground and the existing car park, at the site of the old whale pool. 

With five of the hot salt water pools temp ranging in temperature from 40C to 28C which includes a  fitness pool and a smaller plunge pool be around 11C giving plenty for Christchurch to choose from. 

There are four zones of family passive, therapeutic, active, and family zones giving Christchurch great options.

Operating between 10am and 8.00pm seven days a week visitor levels are estimated to be up to 195,000 per year breathing more life into the troubled New Brighton area.

Pier and Foreshore Society Chair Stewart McNeice says He Puna Taimoana is an exciting development for the whole city.
The Society has raised $15,000 to support the hot pools development; this group has bought huge benefit to the area and the city itself "we thankyou for your efforts".

Who operates the pools?
The Council will remain the owner of the hot pools and a commercial leisure operator sought to run the pools. The operational details will be negotiated once this operator is on board. DCL and the Council are aware that entry prices will need to stay affordable. It is likely there will be a fee structure that includes reduced entry for Christchurch residents and Community Services Card holders.

Demand Expectation
With a predicted peak demand of 100,000 visitors a year.
The hot pools must meet a wide range of needs.
Different pools will offer different experiences – some will be quiet, some active, and others create a family environment.
There will also be a range of pool temperatures.

Public Feedback

  • 85 per cent of the respondents support the prioritisation of the hot pools, with 2 per cent not supporting the development of hot pools in New Brighton at all;
  • 64 per cent of respondents said they would visit the Hot Pools most often when compared to QEII or the free play area. The reasons offered were: health, relaxation and a unique experience;
  • In order of preference, the benefits people want to see in the hot pools are: relaxation and wellbeing, great family facility for all ages, unique asset that encourages people to stay, fitness and adventure activities;
  • 78 per cent of respondents would use the hot pools year round; and
