Prior to the earthquake you were able to walk around the lake itself through native wetlands down to the pump house onto New Brighton road.

The Reserve has a length of 5.66 kilometres with a second jetty structure over a wetland area off Broomfield Terrace.

Horseshoe Lake Walkway

Prior to the September earthquake you could walk around most of the lakes area with the exception of where there were private dwellings. This walk was very popular with wooden platforms, seating areas and a drinking fountain at the New Brighton road end. It took you along the now Red Zone side of the lake itself opposite the houses and through the bush.

You could enter both at the end of the lake or partway down the track and exit at the New Brighton road pump house.

Now unless you have waders entry is via the Red Zone or by the pump house, and although it appears parts of the track has had some upkeep with regards to mowing the grass most has seen better days.

Some of the boardwalks that used to cover a good portion of the track itself have either sunk to one side or been completely submerged.

Wildlife is plentiful and not used to seeing people and although the track is muddy and in parts missing if care is taken it is an interesting part of the lake reserve. However you need to have a bit of the explorer about you to tackle this one “oh and don’t wear your good gear”.

We think it should be reinstated and linked to more parts of the Red Zone, as most of it is still there you would think all it would take is a few able-bodied people to get stuck in.

Recent work carried out to remove the earthquake damaged Horseshoe lake footbridge and rebuild new car parking, walking track and landscaping was reported by Council to Christchurchnz.info in 2019 to cost $446,528.
When asked if the walkway was to be reinstated the response was that the walkway was still open and usable "it appears the council may have forgotten about this walk once loved by a lot of Christchurch people.
